ask a tech

Refrigerant: Your refrigerant could be low or leaking. That can be an issue for your health, the environment and your air conditioning system. Call a trained technician to repair the leak and recharge the system.

Thermostat issues: Check your thermostat to make sure it is set properly and it is reading the correct temperature. If you’re not sure if your thermostat is malfunctioning, or if you have questions about how to properly set it, give your HVAC contractor a call.

Drainage problems: Check your unit’s drain to make sure it isn’t clogged. Not sure where to check? Your HVAC technician knows right where to look and will be happy to help.

Dirty Filter: A clogged filter restricts airflow through the unit, decreasing its efficiency and reducing its ability to effectively cool the air. Changing the filter is a relatively easy task that you can take on yourself. Of course, if you’re not sure how or if you have any questions, always check with your HVAC professional. Often, they’ll change your filter during regular air conditioning maintenance.

Ductwork Problems: If you’re not getting the type of airflow you’d like from your system and you’ve checked your filter, the ductwork could be the problem. Check your registers and make sure nothing is restricting the airflow there. If that’s clear, it’s likely the problem is further in. You ducts could be leaking air or be clogged or constricted. Work with a professional to clean and air seal your ducts

Of course, if your unit will not turn on at all, and you have checked the thermostat to make sure there are no issues there, your furnace may be experiencing electric control failure. It is very important that you contact a professional to ensure your unit’s electrical connections are not the problem. Because of the risk of shock, you should always leave any electric work to the pros.
